Why You Shouldn’t Wait on Your Furnace Replacement

We’re nearing the end of the summer season, so if you’ve been discussing replacing or upgrading your current heater at all in preparation for winter, you’re probably tempted to wait until the fall or the next fall when you might desperately need it. We understand this temptation. After all, why spend money on something you don’t need right now?

Well, if you paid for repairs a couple of times already this past winter and spring, and your system is aging, you’re wasting money anyway. Why not look into a replacement? Additionally, it’s always better to replace your system now rather than waiting until you actually need it and struggling to get on your HVAC technician’s schedule.

Plus, considering your furnace replacement now gives you time to look into various system options without the pressure of needing the system very shortly. But, how do you know it’s really time for a new furnace? Luckily, we’ve shared some common indicators, below!

Old Age

We mentioned age above—this tends to be the best measurement method for furnace replacement. The average natural gas-powered furnace can last about 15 years while an electric model could technically go a little bit longer, if well-maintained. If your system is a couple decades old, it’s definitely time to start considering replacement. We recommend contacting a pro to have any system 15 years or older thoroughly inspected to check for any signs of inefficiency or disrepair.

Repair Frequency

We alluded to this a bit above. It’s natural for furnaces to need repairs here and there over the years. What’s not okay is if you find yourself calling for repairs multiple times a year, especially in an older furnace. A general rule of thumb to go by in this case, is if your next repair or set of repairs is going to cost you half of what the system is worth, it likely makes more financial sense to replace it.

Decline in Energy Efficiency

One major warning of a furnace that’s in decline from age is a growing rise in the costs to operate it. Compare your utility bills from this year to those of previous years around the same time. If the cost is rising even though you aren’t using the furnace more often than normal, we recommend looking into a replacement system.

Loud Noises

A furnace that makes loud, unsettling noises every time it operates is telling you that it is having issues, whether it’s a loose component or a worn-down part. A single odd noise here or there may mean your furnace needs repair. But if you can’t rid your furnace of rattles, clanging, or electrical humming through repair, it’s probably time for an upgrade!

The Furnace Can’t Meet Your Demands

Is your furnace system unable to warm up your home as well as it used to? There’s no need to keep turning the thermostat up—this won’t do you any good.
