5 Things to Do Before Leaving for Vacation During the Holidays

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, the holiday season, and the time to cherish your friends and family. So cue the road trip to see Grandma Mimi and jet set away to spend the holidays with Uncle Steve and Aunt Sue, but before you do, make sure that your home will be taken care of. Getzschman Heating & Air Conditioning put together our list of things to do before you leave for vacation over the holidays. Check it out below.

Lower Your Thermostat

Before you leave for the holidays make sure that your thermostat has been lowered. This will help save you money on energy bills while you are gone. No reason to waste it when no one is home to enjoy the 72-degree home. We know that in Omaha it can get pretty chilly in November and December, so the lowest you will want to lower your thermostat is 50 degrees. If you lower it too much more, your pipes could freeze and nobody wants to come home to that!

Close The Blinds

Did you know that the blinds or curtains on your home’s windows can also help you save when it comes to energy bills? By closing the blinds or lowering the curtains, you help to keep the heat inside instead of escaping through the windows. During the colder months, this act also helps to slow the rising or lowering of the temperature in the home.

A Few Extras for Omaha Area Homeowners

Although these next couple of to dos are not heating and cooling related, they are definitely something that homeowners should be doing before leaving for the holidays. Be sure to add them to your vacation preparation to do list.

  • Call and cancel the paper and the mail
  • Leave a light on in your home or put a light on a timer
  • Let your neighbors know that you will be out of town so that they can keep an eye on your home
