5 Signs You Should Replace Your Furnace

We’re all guilty of it. We wait until our furnace or air conditioner actually breaks down before we replace it. We understand. At Getzschman Heating and Air Conditioning, we know a new furnace or AC is expensive and most people put it off until they really have no choice. But there are several good reasons not to wait.

4 Reasons to Replace Your Old Furnace Now
If you know your furnace is nearing the end, have you considered these things:

  1. You’re probably spending more money on repairs to a furnace that will fail soon anyway.
  2. If you wait until it completely fails, you will have to rush into a decision on something that’s fairly costly.
  3. If you replace it now, you’ll avoid dealing with no furnace in freezing temperatures
  4. Heating and cooling companies are the busiest at the start of each season, so you may have to wait longer for replacement.

5 Signs You Need a New Furnace

There are lots of good reasons to act before an emergency, but, how do you know it’s really time for a new furnace? Here are five signs to look for:

1. Your Furnace Is 15 Years Old

The average gas furnace, when it has been well maintained, will last about 15 years and an electric furnace may last just a bit longer. If your system is over 15 years old, you’re on borrowed time. It may last a bit longer, if you’re lucky, but start looking around now so you don’t have to choose quickly.

2. Repair Calls More than Once a Season

The second biggest sign of a furnace on its last leg is the number of repair calls. If you call for repairs more than once a year, you’re throwing good money after bad. You’re paying for new parts meant to last for 15 years when the actual furnace may only have months left. A good rule of thumb is that if the repairs cost more than a third of what a new system is worth, it makes more sense to replace it instead.

3. Higher Utility Bills

Bigger utility bills mean your furnace is operating at a lower efficiency. Your furnace will cost you more and more just to keep your home comfortable. Take a look at your utility bills from year to year and how much more it’s costing you to keep that old furnace running. It may surprise you.

4. It Makes Loud Noises

An older furnace will make more noise, but if the noises are loud and annoying every time it turns on or off, or while it’s running, it’s a cry for help. Worn down components and loose parts happen, but once repaired, they shouldn’t make noises. Beware, a breakdown is near.

5. Your House Feels Too Cool

Even though you set your furnace to 72 degrees, it never seems to be able to get there. Or maybe your furnace runs non stop even though it’s not extremely cold outside. Your system is struggling because it just isn’t as efficient as it used to be. When turning up the thermostat doesn’t increase the temperature in your home, your furnace is giving up.
